[s-cars] VAG mystery: location of cam position sensor?

My 1552 VAG tool is showing a "mechanical failure of G40" According to
the Bentley Manual the cam position sensor is located at the rear of the
cylinder head. But on my 1995.5 S6 there is a plug where the drawings in
the Bentley Manual. The car will not start. The dealer says that the ECU
is bad, however I am still able to pull codes and run output test
ect.... so I am not sure about their diagnosis.

BTW: These problems are following a front end impact great enough to
deploy the airbag system. Is it possible that a wreck could cause the
ECU and or Cam position sensor to fail?
