  I did have the IC problem on my 91 200 20v.  That was a circuit board
solder fix.  The scrambled auto check on my 92 S4 seems to be just a
plug-connection issue.  There is a door that swings closed on the back of the
IC and has a plugged connection.  I believe this door has some play and
causes a poor connection for the plug, throw in a little corrosion and the
display becomes scrambled.  I've taken the IC apart and sprayed all
connections.  That solved the problem.  A year later it did it again, sprayed
again, no more problems.
