If I were you, I'd just unplug the sensor and give it a try. The idea
was shot down in my house, when the Frau tried to turn the car around in
the driveway. (She's obviously become spoiled, because past cars have
been much worse.) To be honest, I didn't put up a fight, because, though
the effort was somewhat higher on the move, it didn't exactly give the
car any extra steering feel. Think that's just the nature of the beast,
with driven front wheels. As mentioned, you should check the freeplay on
the steering rack. Tighten it up A LITTLE BIT AT A TIME, then drive a
bit. Once the wheel stops self-centering, you've gone too far. Back off
a bit and test drive some more.
Don't know exactly what the emissions test is in your locale, but I've
never had a problem mit cats -- has always been clean, clean, clean. I
have passed cat-less cars before, when the tech was too busy or lazy to
do a visual check.
