Ron,
  I've been having a similar problem on my 92 S4.  I recently tried to turn
on the defrost with the AC to clear the windows and couldn't get the
snowflake to stay on.  The next day I started the car and the AC and the
snowflake were on and worked fine.  A day later the problem repeated itself.
No AC when I wanted it, then started the car sometime later and the AC was on
when the car started.  Regardless of temperature I haven't been able to turn
on the AC except for these situations.  It worked fine a few months ago.  Let
me know if you figure anything out.
