paul,

my brother is an orthopedic surgeon who has worked on the trauma service
many times.  one of the things he tells me is that in drunk driving
accidents, the drunks always seem to come out in better shape than sober
drivers because they're relaxed when the impact occurs.  they're so drunk
they don't realize what's happening, and they don't stiffen up.  bracing
yourself has a tendency to result in broken bones and torn ligaments
in hard impacts.
