I may regret this, BUT having done a few of the integrations in all
years of Audis, being a Cellport Engineer and a confirmed Audi nut, I
think that I can field any question regarding handsfree kit
installations in these cars.
Here are a few good things to know.
1. The wiring diagram given on the Audiworld technical site IS
applicable to ALL prewired Audis from '90-'01 with the exception of cars
with steering wheel controls.
2. With most kits you cannot directly use the Audi mic. It is an
amplified microphone that needs to be biased on the mic + lead to 9-12V.
Most handsfree kits use non amplified mics and a much lower bias
voltage, like 5V. With the addition of small circuit (possibly
documented on the Audiworld technical site), you can use the microphone,
but in most cases it will not function as well as the microphone you get
with the aftermarket kit.
3. You can use the factory wiring and speaker, but you may discover
added alternator whine, etc. due to the length and routing of the
factory wires. Filters don't generally help.
4. The Audi factory antennas are designed for analog frequencies only
(800Mhz range), so digital phones will actually have worse performance
with the antenna than without. I would recommend switching the antenna
to a dual band antenna that will improve performance. FWIW, I use a
Hirshmann patch antenna mounted on the windshield behind the rear view
mirror (invisible inside, and hard to detect outside) in my A6 2.7.
5. Our web site sucks and is being revised. Let me know if you have any
technical questions. FWIW, we will soon have an adapter for the
Motorola V60 phones that will have full voice control. That happens to
be the project that I am working on right now.
6. If anyone is interested in a group purchase, we can arrange great
prices.
HTH!

stuff. I even saw it once at BestBuy in Milpitas, but can't remember
what
it's called. Anyone?

Subject: [s-cars] Audiphone upgrade
Hello All,
Some time ago there was a thread regarding the fitment of a modern cell
phone in place of the factory Audiphone (Motorola), and wiring into the
existing hands free set-up. IIRC a couple of people were investigating
the
potential. Did anyone figure it out? I am considering a new cell phone,
and
would ideally like to purchase a unit that I could interface with my S4.
Any BTDT?
