[s-cars] Differences between S4 and S6

Welcome Dan,
Get ready for some emails, you've likely opened the debate for the week.
Throughout the model year range, body parts are pretty much identical. I
say pretty much, because I know that if I just say identical, someone will
throw down a list of pieces, probably in Excel spreadsheet format (no, make
that Lotus 123), complete with Audi part numbers, VW cross references and
mid-model year changes, highlighted and in a different font, (probably a
Bodoni Bold Italic, or something equally as gaudy) detailing (without saying
as much but implying nonetheless) that I know nothing of what I speak,
thereby irreparably damaging my (already somewhat tarnished) reputation
among listers.
HA! you say, Bodoni Bold Italic isn't even among the choices of
highlightable fonts in Lotus 123!
Well I got news for you, THAT'S WHY EVERYONE ELSE USES EXCEL, YOU
TECHNOGEEKS!
But I digress.
I really like the interior carbon fiber trim in my black-on-black 93. I
think that's the only year it was available. Maybe 94 also. I'm sure we'll
hear soon.
Someone also recently mentioned on list that you sit 15mm higher in a S6
than a S4.

93 S4,
By the way, I see you're in Ohio. We've got a growing contingent of
enthusiasts here in the Buckeye State, including one parts courier that
works for used S-car bits and a warm "Thanks" :-)

Hi Dan;
Welcome to the wonderful world of s-cars! They are indeed a fine automobile
and you can't go wrong with either of them (except if you get a bad tranny
on that '93)!
The major caveat with these cars is the transmission pinion bearing failures
that were prevalent in the '92 cars. Some '93s also had the problem, which
was pretty well gone by '94. The bearing failed around 100,000 miles, so a
lot of the older cars have had the transmission replaced. The failure was
apparently caused by a problem with the factory tooling that resulted in the
wrong torque loading on the bearing. The Porsche 968 uses the same transaxle
and they are also suffering pinion bearing failures during these model
years.
Check out www.urs4.com under the FAQ section. There is a list of changes by
model year and a buyers guide. www.s-cars.org also has a buyers guide and
technical specs.
Happy hunting!

Please forgive me, but I am relatively new to S Cars and I am
considering buying either a 1993 S4 or 1995 S6. I have read about both
cars on the Web and drove my first S Car yesterday a 1995 S6, and it was
GREAT! However, I would like to drive a 1993 S4 before deciding which
direction to go. What are the differences between the two, not only
mechanically but also body style and other aspects of the Cars. I would
most appreciate some help. Thank you.
