Morning, twobro12, welcome to da list-
Heh, Lee's response hit it head on, upgrading the chip will certainly lead
down an endless path of maniacal pursuit of the perfect //S car. That said,
and Lee neglected to mention, it's also NOT safe to wives, marriages, etc.
Realistically, there are a few things to consider, from my BTDT.
Chipping the car makes it fantastic to drive, hard, which you will then do.
Often. Repeatedly. Unabashedly. However, in doing so it produces some
stresses to your 100k car (chipped mine @ 83k):
-Be prepared to start blowing boost hoses. Then begging the list here for
people's spares. Then f'n the pooch and buying your own set of Samco
silicon's, with big shinny clamps.
-Your BPV will likely get blown to bits or simply begin goosefarting,
duckfarting, or whateverfarting. You'll then replace to Bosch Sport 710N as
it's affordable. And that will blow apart 2 days after install. Then
you'll pay the crink for a Hyperboost, etc. OK, my 710N has been 100% fine
(so far?), but I'm ready each day for kaputsky.
-You'll wanna measure the enormous increase in boost now, especially helpful
in diagnosing the above inevitable failures, so you'll lay down the coin for
a boost gauge. The $ hill begins it's ascent...
-How's your tranny sound today? Nice and quiet? Good. Listen to it now
cause it *may* not be that way long after chipping. My '95 has developed a
1st gear whir, now @ 97k, not pinion, not broken teeth, but likely worn 1st
gear bearing. I DO do hard 1st gear starts. I just bought a warranty. I
will have a CRB this winter 8-)!
-3-bar power won't be enough after about thirteen minutes, you'll soon find
yourself cashing in the kids trust accounts for RS2, et al, bits.
-Lee's right about brakes / suspension. The chip allows you to eat pavement
in voracious quantities. You'll soon wear out brakes, or have a few
hole-puckering experiences that will have you looking into your pre-nup
clauses with your wife to fund big reds, etc. Then you'll have so much dive
and squat from the suspension that you'll... it's a vicious cycle.
And an evil Bitchtemptress most of us masochistically catering to.
The process is best described as:
The leg bone is connected to the... Hip bone. The hip bone is connected
to the... some-thing. The some-thing is connected to my... wrist-watch...
-Dr. Nick, Simpsons.
Conclusion? Do it. Join the insanity.
