A "Pencil" Iron is quite versatile. It looks kinda like a wand with a metal
point at the end. They allow you to be much more precise than larger "U
tip" irons.

A Lead Tin mixture w/a resin core will work well. I personally like the
really thin stuff that almost looks like a wire.

Depending on how accessible they are, vise grips will work well for larger
pieces and alligator clips for smaller. If they are wires, twisting them
together works.

Dab a little "Flux" (can buy it where you buy solder) on both target
surfaces and heat the target point of the larger conductor (if one is
larger) with the tip of the iron. Hold the solder near, but not touching,
the iron on the conductor. When the temp rises enough, the solder will be
"sucked" into the joint.

The temptation for many is to heat the solder directly and drip it on the
target surface creating an inferior solder bond.
