I have gone into the maintenance screens and found out that my USA
version is in fact the same as yours: revision 5.3, update 458. Thus my
assumption about it being v.5.42 was incorrect. I have no idea where ai
had gotten it.
Also, this version 5.3 also covers everything North American to 2001
model year. So I guess I'll wait since my newest car is the '98 A4
anyway.

I am now convinced that I have been struggling with the hardware issue
in the SCSI HDD controller, not the software installation. I am still
puzzled.
