lee,
rear disc brake calipers with built-in parking brakes will require a
special tool to retract the pistons, because they must be screwed back in.
this isn't the case with front calipers, as they don't have parking brake
mechanisms. you should be able to retract the pistons with a "disc brake
pad spreader", or just a large C-clamp.
i don't have specific knowledge of the A6 brakes, but what i've said
applies to most cars.
