Scott:
For the spark test you describe, you must also ground the plugs.
Assuming you have done the test properly (I am concerned that they weren't
grounded), and truly have no spark, there are only 5 possibilities I can
think of:
1. Cam position sensor
2. Crank Position Sensor
3. RPM position Sensor
4. Fuse above ECU
5. ECU
I would pull codes before anything else. The codes don't lie! It is highly
unlikely 5 coil packs or 2 POS's have failed at the same time.
Good luck,
Bob

Subject: [s-cars] No Spark!!...was running rough or not at all
Hi again,
I am not getting a spark from any of my plugs. Would this potentially be a
problem with my hall sender (camshaft position sensor)? What else do I need
to check?
After my car wouldn't start...I switched out the coils with my brother's
'92s4. No luck. Also we just switched out both POS's with the same result.
Then I did the spark test (left the plugs in the coil boots, and looked for
spark)...nothing.
Please reply back to the list, rather than to my email address--as I am
unable to access my email over the weekend.
TIA for all of your help,
Casey '92 s4
