My boiler broke down over the weekend, so I fixed that instead of playing
with the car!
However, just before the boiler broke, I took the dash apart and spent quite
some time looking for the loom containing the wiring for the Engine Check
Light - it's definately not there. This was confirmed by Phil Payne, who
emailed me this morning to say that UK s-cars don't have the wiring for this
prefitted to the IC. He recommended taking a feed for a 12V LED from the
fuse/relay box. I'll give that a go and report back.
It appears as if the Californians have the wiring and the bulb fitted. The
rest of the Americans/Canadians have the wiring, but no bulb. The Europeans
have the wiring (not fastened to the IC though - just lying loose behind the
IC) but no bulb. And, in the good old UK we have ... sod all. Typical!
I did see a momentary 2.0 on the boost gauge though. I can't get it above
about 1.7 in 2nd, and if I try testing it in 3rd or 4th, I keep running out
of road and reaching ridiculous speeds.
I squeezed lots of hoses - they all appeared in good condition, but
obviously my squeeze test wouldn't divulge a minor split.
Phil Payne, the great quattro turbo guru advised me that 'Air mass sensor
potentiometer and inlet air temperature sensor cover 98% of S2 problems.'
I'm tempted to replace those (and maybe the O2 sensor as well) if they're
affordable.
When I opened the throttle, I heard one click when it opened. I was
expecting another click later on indicating WOT, but I didn't hear any. Any
thoughts anyone? When my Bentley arrives, I'll be able to test it with my
multimeter, but that's a few weeks away yet.
Final question: how many UK s-car listers are there? I know there's me and
Jonathan Khang, but are there any other lurkers? There's no shortage of
s-cars over here. On any given day, there have got to be about 10 each S2s,
urS4s and urS6s for sale on www.autotrader.co.uk, so there must be a few
hundred (at least) changing hands every year.
