  The piston can't be retracted with the pads on. The piston has to be turned while pushing it in as there is a big screw inside the caliper that keeps the pads positioned close to the rotor and compensates for wear. It's really not hard to do with a c-clamp and some channel locks. You just have to be careful of the dust boot.
  The pads actually rest on a carrier that attaches to the suspension knuckle. The caliper attaches to this with the guide pins. You need a 13mm wrench to turn the caliper pin bolt and a 15mm wrench to hold the pin. The pads simply rest on the carrier and can be easily lifted out once the caliper is out of the way. If you took the carrier and the caliper off as one piece (allen bolts) you may have to put it back on to break the cliper pins free.
