A few years back I had the misfortune of being forced to perform a similar
manoeuvre  in my '89 200 tqw.  I wqs travelling down 84 (IIR) at about 75
/80 when a muffler appeared before me at windshield height.  An 18 wheeler
had run over the thing and tossed it up in the air.  As it was clear to my
right (thank god for situational awareness) I immediately swerved right and
avoided the projectile but was equally surprised by the amount of opposite
lock I had to provide to maintain control.  My wife was sleeping at the time
-scared the sh!t out of her.
