[s-cars] Oh, No...S Car Won't Go

With 144 K on my 95 S6, I took no chances before setting out for
Florida. Two days before leaving, the MIL light started beaming at me
intermittently. Dealer pulled the codes and got a Camshaft Position
Sensor fault. It's a costly replacement, so I loved that he simply
cleaned the connections.
Smooth trip down till the last 300 miles, when the MIL light started
smiling again, off and on.(Ambient temp now 25 degrees warmer than when
we left.) Unpacked the car and headed for Publix, loaded up with
foodstuffs, and --- after getting us all the way here unscathed--- the
car refused to start. I've experienced 'car wash syndrome' once or
twice so I waited 20 minutes and it went. Repeat performance next day.
I've searched on-line archives and realize options for 'hard to
restart' include fuel pump check valve, system pressure regulator,
vacuum leak, etc. as well as...camshaft sensor.
Any suggestions for me, other than heading for an Orlando area dealer
and throwing myself on the mercy of his scan test? I've seen posts
where dealers are charging $600 and up to replace these sensors, but I
doubt that recleaning will prove to be the answer. Thanks kindly for
any help you can send my way.
