Is this a trick question?  Without a doubt the simplest 4 stage process:

1.   	Place a unique, identifying secret mark on the valve cover.  Something
like your Social Security number would do nicely.
2.   	@ 3AM have some one drive by Hap's pasture in Evergreen and toss the
valve cover in to Hap's yard.
3. 	Wait @ 48 hours.
4.	Drive back to Hap's place with a story about how you lost the cover and
positively identify it as yours.

Easy.  Or you could use the Don's trick, but you have to get dressed up for
it, and wrangle an invitation over to Hunter's place for a house warming of
something.  Bring the valve cover,  fill it with nuts, pretzels or some
other kind of party snack or little sandwiches.  Forget to pick the valve
cover up when you leave.  Wait 24 to 48 hours.  Go back and pick up the
valve cover.
