[s-cars] Brake R&R issues (kinda long)

Hi Nick;

Better results are usually achieved with a pressure bleeder rather than the
old tried & true "pump the brakes, honey" method. In addition, the rear
proportioning valve is an air trap on these cars and can be a bear to bleed
completely. If the pedal is soft, you haven't got all the air out, so keep
at it. Sometimes tapping the caliper with a hammer (a 12 lb sledge should
work - just kidding!) will shake loose trapped air bubbles.

Hi all,
Replaced the e-brake cables, rear calipers, lines, rotors, and pads all
around on my 93 S4. 'twas a cathartic experience in that I feel I won't have
to curse again until, well, until I attempt to do the same thing again in
the
future. The only issue is this -- the pedal feels soft even though I've bled
the lines in the proper order twice. I just pumped the brake pedal slowly
several times per caliper and used Super Blue. Any ideas?
Things to watch out for:
1- Have the clips for the handbrake end of the cables available
2- There is no way around taking the rear exhaust off, take it off and save
yourself the 30 minutes of trying to work around it before you decide that
it
needs to come off anyway.
3- the front calipers have hard lines that were lock-tited and will probably
have to be sawn off. I did this and was saved by a Napa sales guy that knew
what he was doing, two pieces of prefab line custom bent by yours truly
worked like a charm.
4- I had a front right caliper with one of the guide rods so rusted, it was
seized. I had to heat it and let it soak in penetrating oil before it would
start to give.
5- Why can't a company that makes a superlative automobile not make a rear
caliper that will not to go bad every two years?
6- It is a rewarding experience to go out for a Sunday morning drive after
doing so much work on the car.

Later,
Nick
93- S4 - new brakes, new tires, goes much faster due to lighter load of my
empty wallet.
95.5 S6 Avant - suffered through 3 hours of standstill traffic in NYC
yesterday.
