The funny thing is, depending on your area and provider,
dial-up can cost as much as broadband.
My parents had AOL dialup (yikes!) and switching to cable
actually cost less- $40/mo. for cable, all-inclusive, while
dial-up was something like $20/mo. plus another $35 for the
phone line.
With download speeds up to 500kb/s on cable, I would not be
complaining. Typical speeds more like 150kb/s, I've never seen
that on my so-called "1500/384" DSL connection.

Since I could be accused of being a turbo touting, ipod playin techno
geek of sorts I'll contribute my .02 to perhaps persuade fence sitting
dial uppers (if there are any left) to jump on the broad band band
wagon. Eventually you're gonna get it, so why not sooner than later. My
neighborhood is still waiting on dsl and/or cable. Fed up last
December, we went the $69 /mo earthlink direcway satellite dish. Speeds
are excellent all things considered most the time. Bad weather= go read
a book though. When my daughters are home from college, everyone needs
web access. So, my teacher(techno wannabe) wife spent like 80 hours
tryin to figure out how to wireless network the PC's and the Mac's
using the (wi-fi) Mac Airport. Yikes! It's a miracle I tell ya:)
Amazing. Technically difficult cause Earthlink uses USB to connect to
insure against such networks. Also , FWIW, I would surely NOT want to
share my wi-fi connection access with any neighbor based upon security
risks. TV is now pretty much relegated to the younger kids cartoon
network and da "stinkin" Bears football and occasional DVD of course.
