[s-cars] Altitude and Horsepower

Speaking of moving to Colorado...
The worthless rambling of the day...
Having lived in both Albuquerque, NM and Ft. Collins, CO my whole life (both
at a mile high or so), I was in Seattle over the weekend visiting the folks
who recently moved up there. I have always noticed that my rentals seemed
awful quick at sea level (I love a nice burnout in a Taurus), but had
nothing to compare them to. Well, my dad has a '98 A6 2.8q, which at
altitude seems rather weak. At sea level, I was able to nearly get myself
arrested racing a new 350Z from Seattle to Tacoma. (I think the guy in the Z
actually did) The 2.8 really feels like a 2.7t does at a mile high.
Impressive. (and those new Zs must be underrated) My mother has a '97 E420,
and I was couldn't stop smiling as it was WAY too easy to break the tires
loose. The traction control was working overtime at sea level, while here,
it would only go on in the dirt. Turn it off, and enjoy some throttle
steering (every Quattro owner's dream)
The moral of my story? While a turbo does not loose quite as much power at
altitude, I have decided that I will have to buy a new M5 and move to the
west coast! :) (sorry Paul K. and Pizzo, no east coast for me)
