[s-cars] RE: Need a mellow performance muffler!

FWIW, I am a huge fan of Magnaflow mufflers. Also FYI, the Stromung system
(at least the early version I have) uses Magnaflow mufflers.
The shop I use www.mufflex.com is in Trenton NJ and I would highly recommend
them. Denny, the owner, is a Porsche club racer and avid drag racer and
only does performance work. Interestingly, he is now recommending a
muffler called Spin-tech www.spintechmufflers.com (site seems to be down
today). He explained that the sound dampening technology this muffler uses
works a lot like an oil separator, basically running the exhaust into a
cyclone like spiral, and the sound waves can't make the turns and cancel
each other out. He went on to say that it was very low restriction, and was
a hot setup in several racing classes. Also that they work well in
conjunction with a magnaflow (if the customer felt the magnaflow was still
too loud) because it used a completely different technology that would
dampen different frequency sounds.................Well, I kind of though the
name sounded cheesy (reminds me of stop-tech) and I'd never heard of this
kind of muffler. Then a few months ago, I bought a book from Chris Miller
(BTW- he's the editor @ Bentley) called "Scientific design of intake and
exhaust systems", and wouldn't you know it, this technology is thoroughly
discussed in the book.
This might be a good choice as a second muffler for anyone who has installed
a performance exhaust and thinks it is too loud.

I had the local muffler shop fabricate a Y-Pipe to a single 3" back to a
MagnaFlow muffler for around $300. The sound is very nice - slightly
louder than stock in the cabin but not headache loud, and much
throatier, aggressive sounding outside! I have had a Dynomax muffler
before as well and prefer the MagnaFlow. Definitely not as shiny as the
Stromung, Strebro, and Borla, but also only costs 1/5 of the price! Let
me know if you need photos.
