John,
This is definitely not normal. I can't imagine that this should be over
3000-3500 rpm, or so. Has this been the way the car has always been or
something more recent? It is either one of two things:
1) Bad tach or bad signal getting to it -- most likely
2) A clutch that is slipping A LOT!! -- unlikely you wouldn't notice any
other problems

Subject: (Non-S car content) A4's RPM
Hello,
Sorry for the Non-S car content. Maybe you guys can help out my friend here:
Audi A4, 1999, 2.8 Quattro, 5-sp. At 120Km/h, the RPM shows 4,900 to 5,000
in 5th gear. Is this normal? Red line is 6,300 RPM.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.
John Hosi.
