Keith,
thank you for such a dissertation. Funny you should post it today, after
a couple of my friends and I have argued almost until almost losing our
voices, over a Martini this past Sunday on this very subject. Thay had
seriously tried to tell me that a Traction Control equipped car like a
BMW would be equal in snow to an AWD car such as an Audi quattro.
Of course, they were pushing this nonsense on me only coz they have
never driven a quattro in snow them selves. He-he..
You have just saved me a lot of typing. I've cut and pasted your post in
my e-mail to them.

Hell, even between my previous Torsen + rear Diff Lock '89 200TQ and my
present Torsen + the so-called "EDL" '97 UrS6 there is a world of
difference. My wife's '98 A4 is also equipped with this "feature". I am
very pissed at Audi, having already tasted the traction of the real Diff
Locker.
