I also do the under hood trick... have for years.  I use an old sock and put it
over my hand and then spray it with AA and proceed to wipe down everything under
the hood.  A clean engine is a HAPpy engine (pardon the pun) and it certainly
helps identify any potential leaks if and when the occur.
Lately I've been using Vinylex the majority of the time but my '86 Merkur XR4ti
has gotten regular treatment with AA since day one and the vinyls and hoses are
all in excellent shape to this day.
