Chris,
You're already in line for upgrades and your S.O. should join the WOE's ME club.
You just don't know it yet!  All kidding aside:
I did not compare a A4 2.8 with a stock  (I presume) S4. but  I can imagine the '93  at 3800 lbs and 227 BHP may not blow your socks off. It's not a quick-off-the-line car, in stock form. Coming out of a 10Valve 200TQ, I thought the S4 was in a new level with much much more room to improve.
A first/second un-modified original owner car with documents is a great start for a performance German sedan mod prograqm. All of us here have that disease to one level of another.
Get your MTM or Intended Accel first stage chipset and it's really come alive.
Go further, and it's truly amazing.  Some guys on this list are near 340-390 BHP with a sedan that handles like a, (choose your favorite)  Vette, whatever. (Flame suit on)
If you DO take the step, budget chip, brakes, suspension, exhaust and then re-run that A4 impression.
