Jonathan,

Believe your mechanic.  The closest thing you can do to change as much fluid
as possible is to do multiple drain/fill operations (running the engine in
between so as to exchange as much ATF as possible).  I suggest a minimum of
three times if you're really concerned or have burnt the fluid.  I did this
successfully with my v8 and nary had a problem with the tranny (and I had
her on the track numerous times for the 120k that I drove her).
