Hey Guys,
I got the trans in last weekend. The new clutch is very nice and the new
trans got rid of a few noises I didn't know were coming from the trans. FYI
the newer (1995) housing is the same as my early 1993. So I'm guessing the
clearance issue with the later clutch must have something to do with the
flywheel. Since it was Saturday and the car was 100 miles from home and I
hadn't had a car in 3 weeks. I decided to put it back together with the old
pressure plate. It wasn't very worn and cleaned up nicely with some emery
cloth. I still hated doing it though. This being the 4th time putting the
trans on it was a piece of cake. Just lined it up with the adjustable trans
jack and shoved it on. It went all the way with very little force and no need
to draw it down with the bolts. I'm just going to send the pressure plate
back for now. I'm sure after all the practice I've had I could R&R the trans
in a day and a half but the clutch works great so I'm going to leave it for
now. (My friend, who has a Porsche 968, said it feels like the clutch is out
because the pedal is so light). This job is a ton of work but it's doable.
The only thing I needed to get were the 1/2-shaft gaskets. I didn't realize
these were open to the CV joint. (Messy) . The trans jack is a must! Make
sure you have the correct pressure plate if your car is 1993 or older!
I have to say it's a good feeling having finally mastered the quattro
clutch job. Contact me if anyone want's the full BTDT. This job is doable but
it's not for everyone.
