Guys,
I don't recall seeing anyone report out on this before so I figured I'd tell
you guys about my new toy. I bought the HubShark tool kit ($250 from the
Tool warehouse) a couple weeks ago and 4 wheel bearings for my S4 from Tim
Leclair at Foreign Auto Parts here in Flint. The Hub Shark is a set of
sleeves, collars, plates and huge threaded rods to allow you to change the
wheel bearings while the hub remains on the car.
It's a pretty cool tool, and worked very well. It is still a long, tough
job to do, and as a matter of fact, I'm not sure if it is any easier than
taking the strut right off and taking it to my friend's shop where I can use
a hydraulic press. I'll tell you this much - you better have a healthy air
impact wrench. My compressor and my impact got a real workout tonight. I
did both front wheel bearings from start to finish in an evening. I could
cut that in half next time I think. The second one took half as much time
as the first one.
It is very nice to have a quiet car again. It runs like a luxury sedan
should now. :-) Makes me much happier with the car.
