I had similar issues with my '92 S4.
    I complained of a clunk every time I loaded the suspension in a turn.
    My mechanic looked at the front end, found nothing. Gave me the car back
and said there was nothing worn or broken.
    I keep hearing it, so I took him with me. He heard / felt it as well. We
took the front end apart, piece by piece. Changed shocks, bushing...
everything we could think of.

We were finally able to reproduce it in the shop, but still could not find
it.

Finally, we got one of his other mechanics to lie under the car as they
lowered the hoist down on it's wheels which were supported obviously off the
ground.

    After all this, it was this tube that runs parallel to the sway bar. The
sway bar would load up and somehow clunk against the tube. Was nice to
finally find it, but cost me a bunch of labor.
    Almost makes you want to wait till it breaks before you fix things.
