[s-cars] Importation costs

I have found a very nice '97 S6 north of the border that I am considering
purchasing. I know others have done this, and am pretty familiar from the
archives on what needs to be done to get the car DOT and EPA legal
(basically a letter from Audi stating it meets US standards minus the
instrument cluster and installation of a new cluster). My question at this
point is what are the costs outside of purchase price and regular state
sales tax/registration fees (cluster replacement, import duties, registered
importer fees, paperwork, etc)? Is using a registered importer the only
viable way to get the car into the country? Or can I do the importation
myself? The extent of these fees will pretty much be the deal breaker here,
so any BTDTs would be greatly appreciated.
