Jani,

Do you have more details / photo regarding your oil cooler mod ?
Have you try the wheel liner solution on your car ?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Frederic

Subject: [RS2list] RS2 on track (breather system tested)

Hi listers,

I had an opportunity to track the RS2 on Friday. Since I've only been to
track once this year due to various problems, I was itching to go, you don't
really get to drive the RS2 in traffic like it is supposed to, and also to
test oil cooler and breather modifications. And since winter is coming, I
had to get some tarmac G-fix for my disease. :-)

The car worked perfect. This was really the first time on track that I can
say that, and that is thanks to the breather system modification that is in
list's files. Even after really hard 5-6 laps, then cooling and another 5
laps, it had not consumed a drop of oil, I did not have to add any all day.
And no smoky puffs the next morning, earlier I used to have oily smoke for
several days after tracking the car.

Since the breather oil did not mess the WGFV (and the whole intake), boost
control was working like a wonder too, no overly high boost or pulling away
power due to knocking. I did use RON98 fuel and Liqui Moly octane booster.

Oil cooler mod proved not to be enough: even the double standard RS2 size
oil cooler could not keep oil temp from rising to 130C (after 2-3 laps). The
temp stayed there, and I was comfortable with it, since I had new 10W-60
Castrol, that had been given all clear to 140 C from an experienced race
team. I did try to keep it below 130C, but it kept rising there after a few
fast laps. I'm now planning a larger air intake to the OC during winter,
current utilizes standard RS2's air intake, and is smaller than necessary,
partly causing high temps.

The temperature was low, 12-13C, so no problems with engine temps, and
brakes worked great as always, absolutely no fading. Power was also good due
to cool air, wheelspin was the issue, a rear lock would help.

About the track session: the track (Ahvenisto) is like Nordschleife in
miniatute size, very little runoff, steep hills, challenging for your head.
There were about 30 cars, anything from old Volvo 240 to Porsche 944 turbo,
and we had 4 hours of track time. In the beginning it was wet, which would
be huge fun if there was run off, now I had to be careful. Was the fastest
during this period, though I took it quite easy. Noticed that RS2's brakes
are quite rear biased in corners. I have the big brake kit btw. The car was
understeering on power in one long corner, so I decided to play a little
with brake, right away I was looking through side window. Managed to catch
it though, the chassis is forgiving. Seems that the car likes to slide, but
not spin, a little correction gets it back easily, really nice chassis.

When the track dried I had to push a little harder to keep the 944 turbo
(chipped + wg mod, ca 280 hp, 17" wheels) behind. The driver was quite
amazed that his sport car did not match a wagon. He was cheered by
information that the wagon had left from Porsche factory, and "their
factory" was a co-manufacturer, some consolation. The most fun I had was
with a BMW E36 coupe, it was 325i masked to be M3, quite high hopes of
himself and the car. I let it catch me until it was 2 car lengths behind,
then floored it. Poor guy must have been thinking he had the upperhand, as
it was my warming lap and he was closing. During the next 2 straights and
fast corner I pulled about 200 metres on his bimmer, did not see it after
that. By his looks it was hard to swallow, especially with a girl sitting
beside him to wittness it.

All in all, I had a nice time, car is 100% in shape now, seems to run even
better having gotten some real driving. If I get the promised avi-video from
the event, I'll post a link to the list.

Regards,
Jani
