Greetings all,
First off, please excuse the non-essential portions of the below
forward.
Second off, I am seeking suggestions to help troubleshoot a boost
pressure / power delivery issue that was revealed as a result of dyno
(Dynapack) testing my car yesterday. I'll start off by giving some
vehicle biographical info.
'93 UrS4, 107k miles, K&N panel filter, RS2 turbo, RS2 exhaust manifold,
Stromung 3" turbo-back exhaust (sans katalystor, i.e. if you could see
around the curves, you'd catch daylight from the other end. i.e II, it
shoots fireballs upon extreme overrun at the track!), 3.0 Bar pressure
transducer and Hoppen / Lehman Stage III firmware. ~93 octane fuel.
That's it. In other words, MAF, injectors, and FPR are all stock.
Car ran rich, getting as rich as 13.1. It would be nice to have gotten
to <=12.5 though.
Anyway, the main issue is how abruptly boost drops off after peaking at
26 psig (IC heat soak was immaterial as the 2 essentially identical runs
were done with the car simply warmed up from idling and not from being
placed under load). Accodingly bhp & torque peaks are just that, peaks
(kind of like the IXIC on March 20, 2000), and not plateaus. I don't
recall this always being the case with this particular firmware, it used
to hold boost further through the revs.
What else, what else, hmmm?? Let's see... no vacuum leaks to speak of
(gauge holds steady). Bruce Mock has driven the car on the track, and I
think he'd agree that the car feels great. Funny, but I was pretty
content prior to yesterday's results. However, if I am missing ~50 bhp
somewhere, I'd sure like to find 'em.
Several have already opined that it is a firmware issue, but that I
should start by fattening up the air/fuel ratio and re-testing.
So, is there something that I am missing? I am remiss to just throw
different MAf / injs / FPR with my firmware as it wasn't designed for
such? Anyone know of firmware that was designed with these different
components in mind?
To really confuse the matter though, last year Mance got ~50 bhp more
(at the wheels. Please let's avoid the correction factor discussion),
running the same turbo, em, and firmware. However, IIRC, he was also
running 100 octane, RS2 maf, RC 310 injectors, adjustable FPR cranked
up, and an intact catalytic in his Stromung. His power delivery graphs
were different (not only higher on the scale) in that the shape of the
graph was more akin to what you'd expect on a turbocharged motor (he had
less max boost, 24 psig, but it held higher boost pressures longer into
the rev range).
So, I'm happy to throw all of those other goodies in (well, not happy),
if need be, except I want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything in
the interim.
Finally, BTW, if anyone has a line on an RS2 exhaust cam, could you
please contact Ralph Poplawsky at his email below?
Let the diagnostic games begin.

Greetings all,
I just wanted to thank everyone who attended the Autosport Werks
session yesterday. We had a great turnout, everyone got to see a
great deal and we accomplished quite a few things (All of the totally
slick 550 bhp B5 S4 Sportec goodies, Cody Payne's exhaust cam
install, Stephen Paolini losing a couple '01 A4 fault codes during
the VAG-Com demo, dyno testing my car, and the 996 Gt3 Race car).
I'll try and get some of the pics posted up.
My dyno day results were very interesting to say the least. At the
wheels, 269 SAE corrected (temperature: ~72 degrees, barometric
pressure, and humidity: ~30%) bhp @ 4,840 RPM, and 277 lb/ft of
torque @ 3,895 RPM. Boost pressure levels ramped, relatively quickly,
to 26.4 psig @ 3,800 RPM (23 psig at 3,500 RPM), peaked, but then
rapidly dropped off (no plateau, same as bhp and lb/ft graphs) to
about 12.5 psig at 6,725 RPM. I am trying to get electronic versions
of the graphs to post up. While the peak numbers are marginally in
the ball park for an UrS with a Hoppen stage III setup, the dramatic
boost drop (i.e. no plateau / levelling of bhp or lb/ft at all)is
disconcerting. While it doesn't feel like it at all to drive the car,
there is some performance being left on the table and driveabilty can
be dramitically improved by flattening the bhp & torque curves. As
such, I can't say enough about using the dyno as a tuning tool. This
was my first set of baselines, etc., more info to come as I start
playing with fuel delivery and perhaps modified software.
Many thanks to Grant "WTF happened to Williams BMW" Lipsky, Dave "I
can't stand Scuderia Ferrari" Jones, Pete "Schumi should have won"
Tsai, and the rest of the crew at Autosport Werks for opening up
their shop and hosting us all.
Finally, Ralph has some wheels and tires for sale, see below, and
please contact him directly with questions, etc..
Peace,
Frank--

I have 4 Dunlop SP8000 tires with about 8K miles in excellent shape.
P225-50 ZR/16 Asking $160/set
I also have 5 MSW type 55 wheels. These are 16 x 7.5" , made by OZ in
Italy and will fit the `91 200TQ (also UFOs) and the UR-S4/S6. Others
too, I presume. They are pretty, rounded 6 spoke alloys with no dings
or scrapes on 4 and some scratches on the 5th. Four of them are
mounted with P205 - 55/R16 Hakka 1 snows with studs. The tires are
70% used up and are free with the wheels. Asking $150/set
I can best be reached on my cell phone (720 317 4673) or by E-mail.
I can send pictures to anyone interested.
Thanks:
