[s-cars] Noise from shock absorbers?

The original rear shocks on my 93 S4 were noisy
for the first mile when it was relatively cold outside,
and then they quieted down just as you describe.
But in warmer weather they always stayed quiet.
The noise was a nearly continuous rumble when moving,
so at first I wasn't sure that it was caused by the shocks.
But the noise completely disappeared after replacing
the shocks with Bilsteins.
Possibly the shock valving was worn and was having a
problem with the higher viscosity of cold hydraulic oil.
