I have been there. Took a while, but there is a way to do it without
removing the oil pan:
1. Get a bottle of "PB-Blaster" penetrating fluid. You can find it at
NAPA or most local autoparts
stores.
2. Get a hammer - not a sledge, but something with a little weight.
3. Get the biggest pair of vice grips you can find (if there is a good
head on the bolt left, use an open-end wrench).
4. Spray the PB-Blaster on the plug every hour and tap the bolt lightly
for about a minute. Repeat this for several hours and be liberal in the
amount you spray on. The tapping will help the fluid work its way in
faster.
5. After you feel as though you have done this long enough, grab on the
plug with the wrench or vice grips. Turn the plug with the wrench and
tap on the bolt with the hammer at the same time. Tap and turn the plug
harder and harder until it breaks free. Do not hit too hard as it could
damage the pan or the threads.
6. After the plug is out, make sure the threads are in good shape. You
better plan on replacing the plug AND the washer. You can get them at
the dealer for about $15.
Be very patient. It takes a while. Its better then replacing the pan. If
you do not want to use vice grips, Sears has a set of sockets that grab
onto striped bolt heads. It works nicely.

Dear Listeners: The oil drain plug on my 95 S6 will not unscrew. After
several attempts lying on my back and partially defacing the plug, I
took it to a service center where two mechanics and a breaker bar could
not break it free. They suggested an Audi dealer; however, before I do
that, are there any suggestions from the List? I appreciate BTDT
experiences, as well as any information regarding a type of socket or
wrench for partially stripped bolt heads that was mentioned on the List
awhile ago. It might have been a Sears product. Thank you.
