VAG-com is on my list, haven't decided on the PC or handheld version yet.
What about removing the battery cable? I do have the radio code now. Any
other things to be aware of before the power goes down. Will I have to reset
or re-sync my IR keys?

Douglas,
I am not sure if you can reset the OBD codes without a VAG 1551 tool?
However, there is some Windows-based software called VAG-COM from a company
called Ross-Tech which has engineered a VAG 1551 for your pc. It is
significantly cheaper then the VAG tool. Around $200US. I have been using
this software for years and it is an essential tool for working on your
Audi. Check out there web site at: www.ross-tech.com
The VAG-COM software can do alot more then just reset ODB codes.... it is
truely a must-have for any Audi owner.
Brent.
