Subject: [s-cars] Beware: High wattage bulbs in Euro low beams
I'm running HIDs in the lows and 100 watt H1s
in the highs. Lo and behold, the 100W H1 bulbs have blistered the reflector
on the top of the 1.5" diameter cylinder around the bulb base. This area has
similar geometry to the reflector around the projector low beam bulb, so I
think it's a pretty good bet that high wattage bulbs will damage the low
beam reflectors - especially considering the amount of time the high beam is
on compared to the always lit low beam. It's not a big deal on the high
beams - the main reflector isn't damaged but it is evident that the bulb is
putting out mucho heat.
Something to think about before you pop in the 130 watt low beam bulbs...

Hmmm... What's interesting about this Fred...
I finally got around to installing Santa's Euro lenses Friday, along with
beer drinking-laughing-at-my-skills Rossato, Rich, Ray, and Pizzo. While
cleaning up my reflectors, I noted that very same thing Fred... 1/2"
blistering around high beam bulb base, on top section, on one light. I'm
running STOCK bulbs.
Here's my insane thought then... gee, if I'm gonna blister the suckas @ OE
wattage, what's to loose then by upping to 100W 8-)? Guess I have a death
wish. Though, has anyone sourced a way / price to recoat these beoches?
Methinks with all the coating products in today's world one could do it
right, and do it cheap. Just a guess, whattaIknow.
On a side note...
Euro lens install, along with cleaning hazed projector lenses, front and
back sides of lens on lows, cleaned front of fogs, backs to cumbersome to
bother. Result??? Heh, apparently I missed a very small area around the
perimeter of the projector lens on the low... cool! Why? I now have a mini
version of BMW's A-eyes (I refuse to call them by their fullgayname), I
kinda dig it. It's noticeable that the lows are now clean compared to the
fogs where I only cleaned the fronts not backs, lows nice and clear, fogs a
bit hazed looking.
Output? As so many others have put it... little to no difference in lows,
aside from 'looking' good (which they DEFINITELY do). Heh, lows-only on,
from outside they look like f'n city lights... sad. Highs are semi-better.
But, for the time and $, it's a no brainer. This job was a joke, even by
Paul standards. Brighter / or whiter bulbs, or other things, may be in my
future...
