[s-cars] WGFV

Ed,
If you try this fix please let me know what happens. I have an almost
identical problem except that mine is worse when it's warm. My boost (stock
chip at altitude) fluctuates between 17 and 20 psi during the 5th gear
pull...as soon as it gets below 17 psi it becomes totally smooth and runs
great. This hasn't gotten any better or worse in 4 months time.
Also, sometimes my controller, before this little escapade started
happening, would go to 24 psi and then the fuel pump cutoff, or something,
would kick in and knock it down. So it seems like my WGFV could be
sticking.
I don't want to try the swap coils, plugs, etc. because the wires leading to
the primary side of my coils are in pretty rough shape and I had to
"re-insulate" them with silicone the last time I had the cover off and the
next time I go in there I am going to be forced to buy new coils. Plus, I
would think if it was something in the ignition going bad it would be
getting worse.

Guys,
Just spent the last couple of hours with Ian Duff in his 400 amp garage.
Thanks again, Ian, for the time.... We may not have fixed the problem, but I
didn't have to spend $600 determine my plugs and coils are fine.
We were trying to diagnose the high boost/heavy load stumble/miss the I am
currently enjoying. We swapped in his plugs (no change in my car) and his
entire coil pack (no change). I showed Ian how I can get the car to over
boost to > than 25 PSI by flooring it at low RPMs in 5th. I also showed him
how the car's max boost fluctuates between 18 and 21 PSI in 5th gear. Here
is what I know:
- Plug connectors all have 5K ohm resistance
- Idle is smooth
- Coil pack is good
- Plugs are good
- Power is good until >1 bar
- Miss is subtle, but prevents boost from hitting 22-23 (MTM 1+) in all but
second gear, boost fluctuates from 17-20.5 in 5th gear
- Miss is most apparent when engine is COOL
Everything in the ignition system checks out so the next thought is that
maybe the WGFV is sticking. I slow/sticking/dirty WGFV may cause the
low(er) boost as the valve can't shut air tight, so boost is bled off. The
valve may also be responsible for the over boost problem if it is sticking
shut. FWIW, the WGFV clicks when performing the output tests.
Is it best to just replace this valve, or can it be cleaned ?
