Generally, only in the sense that an upgrade stresses engine components beyond
the levels you've been using them. Where boost hoses and other rubber bits may
have an expected life of 100k miles or 10 yrs (for example) at stock boost
levels, you should expect a shorter life (mileage, time) at higher levels.
Since many upgrades happen to older cars, I would not be surprised to see some
of these components fail right away, leading to a logical, if erroneous
conclusion that the upgrade is the cause of the problem. Also, even after
failure, the car may work just fine with a stock computer--the original rubber
bits and hoses may still be able to contain stock boost levels just fine.
