[s-cars] steering rack

My mechanic rebuilt mine and did the R&R for $750.  He actually recommended
not buying a new one because he has seen alot of problems with them coming
right off the shelf.

Bad news. The deposits on my garage floor are from the steering rack in my
S6.

So it looks like I'm getting a new one.

Questions...

What usually gets installed...new or rebuilt? What do they run?

How difficult a job is it?

Is it something that a shade tree mechanic can do in an afternoon with the
right tools and a helpful mailing list? :)

As long as I'm in there, what else should I change - hoses, bushings, RS2
exhaust manifold, Stromung exhaust, etc...?
