Well Dave, you have more support to your practice than some others I read
here. The toyota TSB's as well as the offroad boys measure wheel lip to
fender to set the adjustable front torsion bars. MLP's method for example
doesn't make sense to me, since wheel center to ground stays constant
regardless of suspension ride height. That measure only changes if you
change wheels and tires.
IME, ride height varies greatly from individual car to individual car. Given
a car stock vs lowered, it's pretty easy to measure differences, and wheel
arch to rim is as good as any (to compare it from a 16in rim to a 15in rim on
anothers measure, deduct .5in). I've also marked the body seam aft of the
front wheels and forward of the rear wheels as a better indicator of rake
angle, but it's much more practical to use rim to wheel arch in a
before/after front-front, rear-rear comparo.
I'll use your method any day Dave, and do all the time. Air gap may be an
estimate, but a tape measure to it doesn't change the conclusion, only
quantifies it.

FWIW, where I live consists of very uneven ground, including my driveway.
This morning, when I made my post, my car was, for the first time since
install, sitting on a level and flat slab of concrete. Lacking any
scientific means for measuring ride height, as I exited my car to walk in to
work, I simply took a good look and relayed those observations on to the
list, not realizing the "air gap" thing was a no-no.
Anyway, I'll still say I'm extremely pleased with the results. It leaves
decent ground clearance, has a very good feel (nice blend of handling and
comfort), and doesn't ruin the front control arm geometry. It's tracking
very straight, no tramlining, no poor behavior under hard braking. That's
exactly what I was looking for.
