Phil and Mikey
Where have we gone wrong with you two? Of course there are choices.
1- You can go the conventional way and use the RS2 MAF route as sooo many
have done. But, what are the gains? You do enhance the flow for the lowend
and hp/torque overall but these gains are marginal(1-2hp at the wheels(ATW)
not corrected for snot(NCFS)). You do however retain some protection for that
mysterious hot wire element with the egg crate design of this MAF"s screens.
2- Then we have the infamous "NEGATIVE BOOST" enhanced methodology of
eliminating the screens altogether from the stock MAF(5hp ATW NCFS). The
downside here being the total elimination of any protection(are you listening
here Pizzo?) during contact, OOps I mean boosted pulls. None other than the
illustrious Don does in fact run without said protection.
3- Now we're talking major MODS. The last choice I'll talk about is the
"Pederhousen BIG MAF Special". Yep, we're talking the Big Fella here. All
98mm of major MAF from a poor unsuspecting 928 S4. You're also talking custom
airbox, intake plumbing, custom variable reistor circuit, and custom
software. The benefits are protection once again but this time from the speed
of flow as the 72mm orifice that is the RS2 and stock MAF is pressed to its
limit. That limit is supposed to happen around 420hp as the hot wire section
is separated from its housing and into your turbo/charge-air plumbing. By
upgrading to a dignified Happersized(tm) MAF mildly disguised as the PBMAFS
you slow down the same airflow to a more manageable speed and retain said hot
wire.
So, Phil those are your choices. No question in my feeble mind that I'd go
the way of the Don and remove those screens. The benefits are further
enhanced as you continue to upgrade your car with say a FMIC and/or bigger
turbo;-)
