FWIW, being unable to (or too cheap too) fund the research of air mass vs.
output voltage on the rs2 vs. stock MAF, I have swapped a rs2 maf in to a
stage 1+ car, and a stock MAF into my full rs2 car, and there was a big
difference in the way they both ran. Both were off, IMO, 15-20%, which
suggests to me that the output signals have different calibrations. I have
heard stories that the only difference between the two is the style of the
"screen", but don't believe it based on the above test.

So Mike and Gang..are you saying that you do NOT need to purchase the RS2
MAF if you are going w/ the RS2 conversion (granted you are missing the
safety screen now) but can equal the flow and ECU g/s readings of the RS2 by
removing the screen on a stock MAF?

Less restriction from the stock MAF's screen vs., the RS2's plastic egg
crate, i.e. the RS2 will flow slightly more air at a given pressure. But
then you can accomplish the same thing by pulling the screen(s) on your
stock MAF too. Take out a pair of calipers & do the math. The screen
physically occupies something like @ 20% (I don't recall exactly any more)
maybe even more like 30% of the area inside the 72mm barrel. Yes, those
little tiny wires do take up more space than you (well at least I anyway)
would think.
Speculation is that the two units generate "slightly" different, but so far
as I know, not quantified, electrical signals from the hot wire to the ECU.
Different chips seem to work with either MAF. But, again speculation runs
rampant as to whether everything is working at "optimum" levels when you mix
& match. You'll have to put burning bamboo splints under the nails of the
chip gurus, and even then I'm not sure you will get a reliable answer.

~When is it advantageous to switch to the RS2 MAF meter? I have to
~replace my stock one; if Bosch 0 0280 213 017 is an improvement
~this would be a good time.

~Thank you.
