[s-cars] VW Side Mirrors

Got a VW as a loaner from the dealer while they were installing a new drive=
shaft in my car. Mirror on the driver's side is about 40% smaller (narrowe=
r? side to side span) than the passenger's. Just like in the UrS6, but re=
versed. Go figure! Wonder if this is VW engineers commentary on the S6 ergo=
nomics. Edward

Casey,

I had a set of stock S4 rims redone by Spec. Wheels of America in Commerce
City last fall. Can't seem to locate their card, but I found them in the
Yellow pages. Two of mine had small (2") cracks on the inside of the rim
and they all had bad pitting and clear coat peel. They did a really good
job. As they described to me, they media blast, straighten and in my case
fix the cracks then re-finish (not necessarily in that order?) and clear
coat. Look like brand new. I was very impressed. Like I said, can't find
my info, but I do remember that it was under $500 for the work and return
shipping to me in Summit County. I dropped them in person just to check out
the place.

HTH. No affiliation, just happy with the results.

Hi all,
Last summer I did quite a number on the face of one of my 17" avus. Now
that I'm ready to put my summer wheels on once again...has anyone had a
good experience with a colorado wheel refinisher? I'm hoping for a
quality job at a reasonable price.
TIA for the help,

Guys,
As you may be aware, I've been chasing down this ***
****** hydraulic issue for the past year with NO help.
So far, I've wasted my money on:

New PS pump
New Steering Rack
New Bomb
New High Pressure Hose from pump---->bomb
New HP hose from pump----->rack
Among other things I won't get into right now...

What I get is after a good brake, when I release brake
pedal, I get mooing sound like SOMETHING (pump, bomb,
brake MC, etc.) is sucking air. I get the vibration
through the steering wheel and some through the brake
pedal, but it's hard to tell because as soon as I put
more brake pressure on, the sound goes away, but
sometimes comes back. It will also go away if I
swerve around (charging the pump back up again?)

I topped off with pentosin the other day, was a teeny
bit low, but I got under the car and I'm seeping fluid
out of (yup, that pump->bomb hose I spent too much
money on)

It's only seeping out of the bottom, which leads me to
believe it might be the banjo bolt/o ring. Can anyone
help? Will send beer and this is the only thing
keeping me from really enjoying the car at this point.
What's the point of having big reds if you're scared
to use em?

Thanks,
Joe

O2 sensor only comes into play closed loop. WOT ( when all the fun SHOULD
start) is open loop, no help from the 02 sensor. WOT is also when you build
boost -- do you really want to risk a mixture that is less than ideal with
20+ lbs of boost?

You guys have to remember that the O2 sensor system is in action here.
Even if your MAF is off calibration for the values in your ECU, you
will sort of limp along. Because when you get to a steady state with
the go-fast pedal, the O2 system will put the mixture where it want's
it to be.

You may have stumbles or flat spots getting to steady state, because
the basic mixture is being set wrong by the ECU because it is getting
invalid signals from the MAF. Same is true with different injectors
or when you've been fiddling with the fuel pressure.

Fellow S-listers, my experience:

Test Mule:
1995 S6:

RS2 Turbo K26hot/K27cold,
RS2 Exhaust Cam
RS2 Injectors
RS2 FPR
RS2 MAF

Lehman RS2 Software
2=3D2E5 Bar Boost MAP

During my build, I came across an RS2 MAF at a good price and put it on my =
=3D
ride before I upgraded to RS2 Fuel Injectors and Fuel Pressure Regulator (f=
=3D
uel delivery "set"). My A/F meter ran really rich under overboost but buck=
=3D
ed and hiccupped as if the O2 sensor and the MAF were playing tug of war wi=
=3D
th the mix. My diagnosis, the MAF is metered for the proper injector regul=
=3D
ated by the proper FPR. Once those parts were upgraded, the car ran as exp=
=3D
ected.

To test my theory, because of this thread, I swapped my old MAF into the RS=
=3D
2 setup and found the car ran lean . once again, the MAF was not calibrated=
=3D
for the injector/FPR setup.

More air gets more fuel until the O2 sensor does not like what it is tastin=
=3D
g . then the ECU tries its best to keep the damn thing from blowing itself =
=3D
up.The electronic signals from the MAF are paired to the flow rates of the =
=3D
associated injectors the ECU is expecting.

So . without boring the audience with measurements of wire diameter or plas=
=3D
tic thickness processes, my recommendation is upgrade the fuel delivery sys=
=3D
tem as a set (MAF, Injectors, FPR).

.and all because I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express and chose to check my em=

Bob,
I for one wish you the best. I know how hard it is to juggle a 'Hobby' like
you had and actually get time for family. Your first sign that life as you
know it is going to change has already occured, wether you knew it or not.

'While driving back one evening with a CRB in my trunk I turned to my
sleeping wife, saw her buldging stomach and thought to myself, why I am
driving 140 MPH and risking my wife's life for $200?'

I've not purchased anything from you, so I don't know the volume of time you
spend with your 'Clients', but I can tell from your message that closing a
deal was probably just as much time as building crates and sourcing parts.
You seem like a GREAT guy and a typical S-Car owner / adict :)
and I'm sure that everyone here will not only understand, but also know that
you will be lurking here keeping an eye on us. So with that, hang in there,
and enjoy the next stage of your life. If you put as much passion into as
I've seen you put in on this list, I'm sure it will be even more rewarding.

Eric
Married 13 years, two kids, two dogs, 2 VW's and 2 Audi's. Not to mention
the job and house...
If I'm sucessfull, they get time in the order that I've listed them above
(VW's first because one is wifes car and the other is race car).

On the bright side, last time I saw a subject line like that, it was
"Jimmy" not "Joey", and it was a tad more than a hydraulic issue :-)

>What I get is after a good brake, when I release brake
>pedal, I get mooing sound like SOMETHING (pump, bomb,
>brake MC, etc.) is sucking air.

Perhaps the ABS unit freaking out? They do this at low speed if the
sensors aren't properly spaced from the teeth on the hub, or the
teeth have lots of rust. Obviously disabling ABS to test is one way,
if you're not familiar with what the ABS unit sounds like when it
kicks in.

IMHO if the pump is sucking air, you'll know, because assist goes
bonkers, cutting in+out. With a full reservoir, it's simply not
possible for any part of the system to suck air, really...

Other listers mentioned the front-wheels-off-the-ground, lock-to-lock
20 times bleeding procedure, have you done that?(by the way, the
advice against holding the wheel against the lock is valid, that
nasty noise is your rack getting ready to go- NEVER hold the wheel
against the stops!)

Only other thing I can think of is a clogged screen in the reservoir,
or maybe a clogged screen in one of the banjo bolts(a few have small
cheesy little plastic screens designed to keep the pump from
ingesting something.) Also, did you pump->bomb hose have that small
plastic tube with the crimped sleeve in the center?

>It will also go away if I swerve around (charging the pump back up again?)

The PS and brake assist systems are separate halves of the pump, and
almost completely separate systems, sharing only the reservoir in
common. The bomb has NOTHING to do with steering- it supplies
pressure ONLY to the brake servo.

Most of your "steady state" running (that I was talking about), is at cruise
not WOT. At least I can't run WOT here in Ohihohaha Land very often or for
very long. And, I can build close to 20 lbs boost at less than WOT. Of
course, I can't cruise there for long in Ohihohaha Land.
