[s-cars] MAF screen removal-please explain

Gents,
I also removed both my MAF screens last night and replaced my K&N w/ a OEM Paper element. Things were a little oily and dirty from the K&N but as for "large" particles on the upstream side of the MAF (towards the airbox) I really saw only a couple of very small flakes on the screen (1mm)..in fact they looked like the wings from some insect. No large pebbles or anything like that could potentially harm the MAF wire or turbo...and this after 145K miles...and 45K of that w/ the K&N..and the car being in Colorado the whole time.
Results: Well w/o a real dyno run and consistent ambient temps it is hard to say..what I can say is on my test run last night the car was running like a Bat Out Of Hell...this AM the traffic sucked (On Earth Day of all days) and didn't really get to flog her much...took the car over to ASW for a alignment and will try to give some more impressions later...

My 2 Cents

Cheers

cp

Hmm.. As we're (almost) all running more boost than the engine needs or
can cope with, (the WGFvalve do its job on all our Audis I hope!?) I
honestly think we're searching for something that isn't really there.
even if the MAF _is_ 20% narrower than the actual tubing with the
screens intact, the turbo compressor housing input diameter isn't. (Have
anyone measured it for a quick comparison?) Are there any _measured_
advantages running w/o mesh?
I fully agree, the spool-up time and lo end power could be ever so
slightly improved, but then again, a 7B EX cam and ball bearing turbo
would be much better still..
I have a hard time figuring out why anyone will sacrifice the MAF thread
for some suspicious kWs, especially in the low- end range.
Run with MAF screens and paper filter should be the conclusion. (Not
that I have more than a little clue of what I'm talking about..;o))

Oh shit! Really have to order some cheap euro car parts from the US
soon, anyone know where timingbelt/pump/exhaust/gasket-stuff is cheap?
Blau? Zygmunt? Scott?)
