Chris,
My recommendation is to NOT let it get worse. If it is just the front CV
drying out, waiting will mean the difference between a new CV and just
regreasing the CV. If you catch this quickly enough, you can clean and
regrease the current CV in just a couple of leisurely hours with a friend
and some beer. It is a very easy job, you just need the friend to maybe
help with the exhaust and take the car in and out of gear while you turn the
driveshaft to get to all of the bolts.
I have been on the list for a long time and the number of actual carrier
bearing failures on an UrS is very few (Do I remember even one?). Most
folks have the same experience as Gary Martin (who just posted) and myself.
If anybody DOES need to rebuild their driveshaft, let me know what
combination of Audi, Mercedes, and BMW parts you use and I shall update my
FAQ. Also, I think I still have the unused BMW carrier bearing as seen in
that FAQ, if somebody wants to go for it.
BTW, the condition you mention deteriorates rapidy IIRC. I think my car
went to sounding like it had gravel in the driveshaft within a week.
