Scott,
Call down to Phoenix's leading tire dealers and see what they have
to say about the desert conditions. I remember living in Scottsdale and
the road surface temps on asphalt being 125 - 145 (F) during middle
September (first 1.5" - 3" from the road upwards, at an ambient temp of
95 to 108), so I would think summer could be even worse. The heat
rating of the tire would be of tantamount importance and even a fairly
hard touring tire ought to 'stick' well at those temps with no problem.
The other issue is that most of the area will not require hard
cornering -- most of the streets are fairly straight with long gentle
curves on the out-of-town through ways, so I doubt you'll be able to
out-drive the tire's cornering abilities (acceleration/braking is a
different issue).
Cheers!
