[s-cars] Spark Plugs - loose

Bob,
1. I have used 'hand torque' on all of my cars, and since almost all
Bosch plugs use the same compressing washer, it usually works like a
charm. The 'handtighten plug, then add another 1/4 turn' is as close to
22ft.lb. as I come, and it usually is sufficient. (It's supposed to work
just on new plugs, so I apply just 1/8 turn on 'used' plugs.) As always,
YMMV. For me, it works. :o)
When I last changed the oil, I checked the plugs, and two were a bit
loose. (I think it was #1 and 4) They were new last summer, and had run
just 10kkm.
2. There's no blow by in the AAN engines which could cause oil in the
plug wells. (Then your engine would be _really_ shot!!) It's just the
cam cover gasket waiting to be changed. (my guess is that you have oil
spills on the sides of the engine as well!) It's a two-beer job, and a
nice afternoon quality time with your car. ;o) Inspect the
cams/chain/belt as well when you're in there, and clean out all the old
gunk from the cam cover. My rear crankhouse ventilation fitting was
loose, so I had to glue it back on. Now there's no oil spills left, and
the engine looks relatively fresh! :o)
Check the archives for how-to's, and remember the two mid-placed bolts
and replace the 'halfmoon' inserts.
Bjorn :o)

> I can't believe how quickly the spark plugs get loose. I hadn't
checked mine for 8000 km (5000 miles) and they were all loose, two very
much so. A couple of questions:
> 1. The factory torque recommendation is 22 ft. lb. I torqued mine
to 25 this time. Do any of you go higher?
> 2. I had a fair amount of oil blow by in a couple of the spark plug
holes. I can understand a bit but should I be concerned? How much
should I expect? I will do a compression check next.
