Hello!
This is a general question to everyone:
My 1994 S4 has about 109k miles on it and the engine has just recently
developed a problem. It seems to be running very rough, like it is not
getting enough fuel. This problem is intermittent, and I cannot detect
any pattern whatsoever. It happens when it is cold, hot, idling, or on
the freeway. One minute it seems to be running great, and then out of
nowhere it happens. When this problem occurs, the car is very
reluctant to accelerate, but acceleration can be accomplished - just not
to normal S4 standards. When this happens on the freeway, for example,
I can let off the throttle and the vibrations decrease, but not all the
way. Then when I throttle it again, the vibrations are at their worst.
When it happens while idling the car shakes a little. I originally
detected this about a 1000 miles ago, and it has been steadily worsened
ever since.
Could the problem be in the fuel injection system? What would make this
problem occur so irregularly? If a hose was blown, wouldn't the problem
occur 100% of the time? By the way - this car has not been modified,
and is totally stock.
I have checked every plug and hose/tube for disconnects or leaks, but
found nothing. I also found no evidence of any leakage on my engine.
Last weekend I discovered that the spark plugs were not torqued down
properly, but that was not where the problem lied. I also replaced the
fuel filter and the air filter last week.
Any opinions welcome. Thank you very much!
