Chris,
This was a common problem on earlier models--first I've heard of in S4.
It was more prevalent in hot, humid south. The fabric has a foam
backing that deteriorates and sags usually in back seat area. The
solution is remove the fabric and clean the crumbling foam backing off
and replace with new fabric. If you have a sunroof, it is not too
difficult, just tedious work carefully removing trim, as the headliner
is on a board that hides the sunroof mechanism and comes down in one
piece and is recovered and replaced. The fabric is surprisingly easy
to match and install and is not expensive, but could be pricey labor at
an upholstery shop if they do the removal and installation work. Or
perhaps it's time for the two-tone Alcantara job . Now, if it's not a
sunroof car, read Bentley...... Actually, read anyway. They will
explain how to remove the board. I had estimates around $1K for my
5000, got it done for less than $200. HTH
