Another source of concern are the wires that run from the power output stages to the ignition coils.  The insulation becomes brittle and cracks, the wire is exposed and you have a short to ground underceath the coilpacks' cover.  If you do find some wires with broken insulation it would be a good idea to just replace that coilpack because chances are if the wiring is old enough to crack, then the coilpack is petty old and a new coilpack comes with new wires.  The wiring insulation also has a tendency to crack inside the rubber boots that go over the power output stage connectors.  So when you solder a new coilpack in you want to eliminate as much of the old cracked wiring as possible but leave enough to solder your connection.  If the power/signal wire for the primary side of the coilpack is shorting to ground I believe this can lead to early power output stage failure.  If it is shorting to ground then the power output stage sees little or no resistance, more current goes through
 its internal circuit, it gets too hot and cooks itself then you have a dead miss on that cylinder.
